This is a cute and simple "baby's first doll." The photo above is a doll completed by one of my awesome testers, Aurora! She did a great job. This pattern was inspired by a loom-knit doll created by Bev.

Materials:

1 oz. colored WW yarn (for clothes)

small amount of skintone WW yarn (for face)

size H crochet hook

black embroidery floss for features

yarn needle

Foundation(hat) - with clothing color, chain 2. sc 6 in second chain from hook. join. ch.1

round 1 : 2 sc in each sc around. join. ch.1 (12)

round 2 : 2sc in each sc around. join. ch.1 (24)

rounds 3-8 : sc in each sc around. join. ch.1 (24)

round 9 : sc in front loops only - sc in each sc around. join. ch.1(24)

round 10 : sc in each sc around. join. break yarn. (24)

round 11 : join skintone yarn to backloops from round 9 (leaving 10 unattached - the brim of the hat), ch.1. sc in each backloop. join. ch.1(24)

rounds 12-19 : sc in each sc around. join. break yarn. (24)

round 20 : join clothing color. ch. 1. sc in each sc around. join. ch.1(24)

rounds 21-40 : sc in each sc around. join. break yarn, leaving a 7"tail. (24)

Stuff doll from the bottom. Thread tail on a yarn needle. Weave through last round, pull tight, tie off. Weave in ends. Embroider on features using thin yarn or embroidery floss. Using a 6" piece of "clothing" yarn and a yarn needle, weave the piece of yarn intothe TOP row of clothing stitches under the head. Pull tight and tie into a bow in the middle to make a "neck".

Kid's Earflap Hat

This is a QUICK, WARM kid's earflap hat. It can be made up in as little as two hours! They're great for charity work because of their warmth and the speed in which they can be made.

materials:
one skein chunky yarn (or two contrasting colors of WW yarn)
a small amount of contrasting WW yarn for edging & ties
J Hook

If using two contrasting colors of WW yarn, hold both colors together throughout

Chain 3, join into a ring.

Round 1: Chain 3 (counts as first DC here and throughout). 9 DC into ring. Join to top of beginning chain 3 (10 DC)
Round 2: Chain 3. 2 DC into each DC. Join to top of beginning chain 3 (20 DC)
Round 3: Chain 3. **DC into first DC. 2 DC into next DC.** Repeat between ** around. Join to top of beginning chain 3 (30 DC)
Round 4: Chain 3. **DC into first two DC. 2 DC into next DC.** Repeat between ** around. Join to top of beginning chain 3 (40 DC)
Round 5: Chain 3. **DC into first three DC. 2 DC into next DC.** Repeat between ** around. Join to top of beginning chain 3 (50 DC)
Rounds 6 - 10 (or until hat is approx. 6.5 - 7 inches long): Chain 3. DC into each DC. Join to top of beginning chain 3 (50 DC)

Now we're adding the earflaps -- working in ROWS.
Row 11 -- DC in 10 DC. Chain 3, turn
Row 12 -- DECREASE over first two stitches. DC across till last 2 stitches. DECREASE over last 2 stitches. Chain 3, turn. (8 DC)
Row 13 -- DECREASE over first two stitches. DC across till last 2 stitches. DECREASE over last 2 stitches. Chain 3, turn. (6 DC)
Row 14 -- DECREASE over first two stitches. DC across till last 2 stitches. DECREASE over last 2 stitches. Chain 3, turn. (4 DC)
Row 15 -- DECREASE over first two stitches. DECREASE over last 2 stitches. (2 DC) Cut yarn and bind off.

Count across 15 stitches on the body of the hat. Add second earflap, following the same directions as above.

Edging & Ties: Using contrasting color, attach to base of one earflap. SC across front of hat (15 sc). SC up the first side of one earflap, using two SC for each row of DC (12 SC). At the tip of the earflap, chain 50. Slipstitch back down the chain (tie made). SC down the other side of the earflap the same as the first side (12 SC). SC across the back of the hat (15 SC). Repeat edging and tie of second earflap, as described above. Cut yarn and bind off.

Newborn Candy Corn, Witch, and Ghost Hats

This cute little newborn hat looks like a piece of candy corn and is great for autumn!

Materials
Approximately 1 1/2 oz orange worsted weight yarn
Approximately 1/2 oz each of white and yellow worsted weight yarn
Size H crochet hook

Foundation : Using white yarn, Chain 3. Join into a ring with a slip stitch.
Round 1 : Chain 3 (counts as first DC). 4 DC into ring. Join to top if Chain 3 with a slip stitch (5 DC)
Round 2 : Chain 3. DC into same stitch. **DC into next stitch, 2 DC into next stitch** Repeat from ** around. Join to top of chain 3 with a slip stitch (8 DC)
Rounds 3 - 5 : Repeat Round 2. (12 DC end of round 3)(18 DC end of round 4)(27 DC end of round 5)
Round 6 : Break white yarn, tie on orange yarn. Repeat Round 2.(42 DC)
Round 7 - 12 : Chain 3. DC into each DC around. Join to top of chain 3 with a slip stitch(42 DC)
Round 13 - 15 : Break orange yarn, tie on yellow yarn. Chain 3. DC into each DC around. Join to top of chain 3 with a slip stitch(42 DC)
Round 16 : Chain 1. SC into each DC around. Join to top of chain 1 with a slip stitch. Cut yarn, bind off, weave in ends.(42 SC)

Melissa Wildes sent me two ADORABLE Halloween modifications to my Candy Corn Hat! Check out the directions and photos below for a WITCH and a GHOST hat!

"This first is a witch, which I worked by using black through row 6, then changing to green, and working through row twelve, and finish off. Using black, ch 4 and slip stitch together, ch one and 6 sc in the ring leaving a length to sew it on (make 2 - these are the eyes). Then chain 15 and beginning in the second chain from the hook, slip stitch 14 times, finish off and leave a length to sew it on (this is the mouth). Then I went back and worked a row of slip stitches around the base of the black, the a row of DC. On the brim around the base of the black, I was working 2 dcs in each stitch, finish off and weave in ends!"

"Then I worked this one with just white through row 12, finish off, and make 2 eyes, by chain 4, then 6 sc in the ring, attach to hat, and then make a larger circle of black, or a smile for mouth and you have a little ghost hat!"

Pumpkin Newborn Side-to-Side Hat

This is a pumpkin version of my Basic Newborn Side-to-Side Hat. I also have a Striped Version with a decorative top.

Materials
2 oz. orange soft worsted weight yarn, scraps of green yarn
Size H crochet hook
Tapestry Needle

Using orange yarn, follow directions for the Basic Newborn Side-to-Side Hat. To make the curly vines and stem, see directions below.

Curling Vines (make 2) Using green yarn, chain 10. SC in first chain from hook. 2 SC in each chain to the end. Bind off and tie tails together in a small knot. ((picture 1))


Stem (make 1) Using green yarn and leaving a 6" tail, chain 10. DC in 3rd chain from hook. HDC in the next 3 chains. SC in last 4 chains. Chain 1, turn. Sc in each SC, HDC in each HDC, DC in each DC. Bind off.((picture 2))

Fold stem in half lengthwise. Using the 6" tail (which should be at the top, where the SC's are), whipstitch together the sides of the stem. ((picture 3)) Tie tails in a small knot at the bottom of the stem.

Attach one curling vine to each side of the stem. Using a tapestry needle, pull the tails of the curling vines up through the stem and out the top. ((picture 4))

Pull tight and trim. This will hide the ends *and* will give the stem a little thickness. Attach completed stem ((picture 5)) to the top of the hat. Weave in ends.

Striped Newborn Side-To-Side Hat

This is a variation in my Basic Newborn Side-To-Side Hat. I also have a Pumpkin Version.

Materials 1 oz. soft worsted weight yarn in color A, 1/2 oz. each of colors B, C, and D
Size H crochet hook
Tapestry Needle

Foundation : In Color A, chain 32. Starting in second chain from hook, HDC in the next 24 chains. SC in the last 5 chains. Cut Color A and tie on Color B. CH1, turn. (25 HDC including initial CH2, 5 SC).
Row 1 : Using Color B and WORKING IN BACK LOOPS ONLY, SC in each SC (5 SC), HDC in each HDC (25 HDC). CH2, turn.
Row 2 : WORKING IN BACK LOOPS ONLY, HDC in each HDC (25 HDC), SC in each SC (5 SC). Cut Color B and tie on Color A. CH1, turn.
Row 3 : Using Color A and WORKING IN BACK LOOPS ONLY, SC in each SC (5 SC), HDC in each HDC (25 HDC). CH2, turn.
Row 4 : WORKING IN BACK LOOPS ONLY, HDC in each HDC (25 HDC), SC in each SC (5 SC). Cut Color A and tie on Color C. CH1, turn.
Row 5 : Using Color C and WORKING IN BACK LOOPS ONLY, SC in each SC (5 SC), HDC in each HDC (25 HDC). CH2, turn.
Row 6 : WORKING IN BACK LOOPS ONLY, HDC in each HDC (25 HDC), SC in each SC (5 SC). Cut Color C and tie on Color A. CH1, turn.
Row 7 : Using Color A and WORKING IN BACK LOOPS ONLY, SC in each SC (5 SC), HDC in each HDC (25 HDC). CH2, turn.
Row 8 : WORKING IN BACK LOOPS ONLY, HDC in each HDC (25 HDC), SC in each SC (5 SC). Cut Color A and tie on Color D. CH1, turn.
Row 9 : Using Color D and WORKING IN BACK LOOPS ONLY, SC in each SC (5 SC), HDC in each HDC (25 HDC). CH2, turn.
Row 10 : WORKING IN BACK LOOPS ONLY, HDC in each HDC (25 HDC), SC in each SC (5 SC). Cut Color D and tie on Color A. CH1, turn.
Row 11 : Using Color A and WORKING IN BACK LOOPS ONLY, SC in each SC (5 SC), HDC in each HDC (25 HDC). CH2, turn.
Row 12 : WORKING IN BACK LOOPS ONLY, HDC in each HDC (25 HDC), SC in each SC (5 SC). Cut Color A and tie on Color B. CH1, turn.
Repeat Rows 1-12 one more time, and Rows 1-11 one more time, for a total of 36 rows (18 ridges).
Finish : Using Color A and WORKING IN BACK LOOPS ONLY,slip stitch the two sides of the hat together. Bind off and cut yarn, leaving a 6" tail. Shove all of the cut ends down inside the hat (so they'll be sticking up when you turn the hat right-side out). Thread tail on a tapestry needle and weave through the top of the hat. Pull tight to gather the top of the hat and tie off. DO NOT CUT TAIL. Push tapestry needle with tail down into the top of the hat, and turn hat right-side out. Pull all of the cut ends straight up together. Wrap tail (still threaded through tapestry needle) tightly around the base of the cut ends several times. Tie off. Weave in end of tail. Trim cut ends to approx. 1" high to make a little "pom pom."

Basic Newborn Side-To-Side Hat

This cute and stretchy newborn hat is crochet from side to side. It is mostly HDC, but the top few stitches are SC to make it narrower, so there's less to gather at the top! Below is a basic pattern Look in my links at the right to find a Striped Version with a decorative top and a Pumpkin Version.

Basic Hat

Materials
2 oz. soft worsted weight yarn

Size H crochet hook

Tapestry Needle

Foundation : chain 32. Starting in second chain from hook, HDC in the next 24 chains. SC in the last 5 chains. CH1, turn. (25 HDC including initial CH2, 5 SC).

Row 1 : WORKING IN BACK LOOPS ONLY, SC in each SC (5 SC), HDC in each HDC (25 HDC). CH2, turn.

Row 2 : WORKING IN BACK LOOPS ONLY, HDC in each HDC (25 HDC), SC in each SC (5 SC). CH1, turn.

Repeat Rows 1 & 2 for 36 rows (18 ridges) or until the hat measures approx. 12 inches across the bottom edge. End with a Row 1.

Finish : WORKING IN BACK LOOPS ONLY,slip stitch the two sides of the hat together. Bind off and cut yarn, leaving a 6" tail. Thread tail on a tapestry needle and weave through the top of the hat. Pull tight to gather the top of the hat and tie off. Weave in ends and turn hat right-side out.

Baby Ripple Afghan

This is a great afghan in two sizes - a 15 X 17" preemie varsion and a 30 X 34" newborn version. It works well for preemies because there aren't large holes to snag fingers and toes!

Materials
Soft WW Yarn -- 4(8) oz, Color A, 3(7) oz color B
Size I crochet hook

Foundation : In color A, chain 70(142).
Row 1 : SC into second chain from hook and next 4 chains. *3SC in next chain. SC in next 5 chains. Skip 2 chains. SC in next 5 chains.* Repeat from * to the end. CH1, turn.
Row 2 : Skip first SC. Working in back loops only, SC in next 4 SC. *3SC in next SC. SC in next 5 SC. Skip 2 SC. SC in next 5 SC.* Repeat from * to end. CH1, turn. Attach Color B.
Row 3 : Using Color B, Skip first SC. Working in back loops only, SC in next 4 SC. *3SC in next SC. SC in next 5 SC. Skip 2 SC. SC in next 5 SC.* Repeat from * to end.
Row 4 : Skip first SC. Working in back loops only, SC in next 4 SC. *3SC in next SC. SC in next 5 SC. Skip 2 SC. SC in next 5 SC.* Repeat from * to end. CH1, turn. Drop Color B, pick up Color A.
Rows 5 - 46 (94) : Repeat Rows 3 & 4. End with Color A. For Edging, SC around the edge of the blanket with Color A.

Shell Stitch Hooded Sweater

Here's a cute hooded 0 - 3 month sweater that I've made for several friends and charities. It is pictured above with Bev's Easy Newborn Booties.

Materials
Approximately 4 oz. baby sport yarn
Size H crochet hook
Three 1/2" buttons

Foundation : chain 45. Starting in second chain from hook, HDC in every chain. Chain 2, turn. (44 stitches)
Row 1 : HDC in first 4 HDC. *2 DC in next stitch, 1 HDC in each of the next 5 stitches.* Repeat between ** till the last 4 stitches. 2 HDC in next stitch, 1 HDC in last 3 stitches. Chain 2, turn. (51 stitches)
Row 2 : HDC in each HDC across. Chain 2, turn.
Row 3 : HDC in first 4 HDC. *2 HDC in next stitch, 1 HDC in each of the next 6 stitches.* Repeat between ** till the last 5 stitches. 2 HDC in next stitch, 1 HDC in last 4 stitches. Chain 2, turn. (58 stitches)
Row 4 : HDC in each HDC across. Chain 2, turn.
Row 5 : HDC in first 4 HDC. *2 HDC in next stitch, 1 HDC in each of the next 7 stitches.* Repeat between ** till the last 6 stitches. 2 HDC in next stitch, 1 HDC in last 5 stitches. Chain 2, turn. (65 stitches)
Row 6 : HDC in each HDC across. Chain 2, turn.
Row 7 : HDC in first 4 HDC. *2 HDC in next stitch, 1 HDC in each of the next 8 stitches.* Repeat between ** till the last 7 stitches. 2 HDC in next stitch, 1 HDC in last 6 stitches. Chain 2, turn. (72 stitches)
Row 8 : HDC in first 12 stitches. Chain 7. Skip next 12 HDC (you're making the armholes). HDC in next 24 HDC. Chain 7. Skip next 12 HDC. HDC in last 12 HDC. Chain 3, turn.
Row 9 : Skip first two stitches. *(2 DC, Ch 1, 2 DC) in next stitch, skip 2 stitches.* Repeat between ** to end of row. DC in last DC. Chain 3, turn.
Row 10 : (2 DC, Ch 1, 2 DC) in each Ch-1 space across. DC in last DC. Chain 3, turn.Repeat row 10 until sweater measures approximately 6 1/2 inches from underarm, or as long as you want the sweater to be. Bind Off.

Sleeves :Join yarn at center of underarm. Chain 3.
Round 1 : 1 DC, Ch1, 2 DC in same stitch as starting chain. Skip 2 stitches. *(2 DC, Ch 1, 2 DC) in next stitch, skip 2 stitches.* Repeat evenly around armhole -- should end up with 8 shell patterns. Join to top of beginning Chain 3.
Round 2 : Slip stitch to chain 1 space. Chain 3. 1 DC, Ch1, 2 DC in Ch-1 space. *(2 DC, Ch1, 2 DC) in next CH-1 space* Repeat in every Ch-1 space around. Join to top of beginning Chain 3.
Repeat Round 2 until sleeve is approximately 5 inches.
Next Round : Chain 2. *1 HDC in next 2 stitches (in other words, decrease).* Repeat decrease around sleeve. Join to top of beginning chain 3.
Next 4 Rounds : Chain 2. HDC in each HDC around. Join to top of beginning HDC. Bind Off.

Hood : Join yarn at top right front edge of sweater neck. Chain 3.
Foundation Row : HDC in next 10 stitches. 2 HDC in next stitch. HDC in next 10 stitches. 3 HDC in next stitch (mark center HDC of these 3). HDC in next 10 stitches. 2 HDC in next stitch. HDC in last 11 stitches. You should now be at the left front edge. Chain 2, turn.
Row 1 : HDC in each HDC across, moving marker up when you come to it. CHain 2, turn.
Row 2 : HDC in each HDC till you reach the marked stitch. 3 HDC in marked stitch, moving marker to the middle stitch of this cluster. HDC in remaining stitches across. Chain 2, turn.
Rows 3 - 12 : Repeat Rows 1 & 2.
Row 13 : HDC in each HDC across. Chain 2, turn. Repeat this row until hood measures 6 1/2 inches. Bind off. Fold hood together (right sides together) and sew seam shut.

Edging : Starting at bottom right corner of sweater and moving up the right side, join yarn at corner. Chain 1. SC in each row up the side of the sweater. WHEN YOU REACH THE BOTTOM OF THE YOKE: (buttonholes) Ch 1, skip one row, SC into next two rows, Ch 1, skip one row, SC into next two rows, CH 1, skip 1 row, SC into remaining rows up around the hood, down the other side. When you get to corners, 3 SC into each corner. Continue around sweater, joining with a slip stitch to the beginning Chain 1. Bind off and weave in ends.

Super-Simple Crochet Newborn Pull-over

This newborn pull-over is made from two identical pieces (front & back) shaped like "T" and sewn together. It has a "boat neck."

Materials
Approximately 4 oz. worsted weight yarn
Size J crochet hook

Chain 62.
Row 1 : DC into 3rd chain from hook and into all other chains (60 DC's).
Rows 2 - 6 : Chain 3, turn. DC into every DC across (60 DC's).This makes the top of the sweater (neck & arms)
Row 7 : DO NOT CHAIN 3. Slip stitch into first 19 DC's. DC into the next 22 DC's then stop (leaving 19 more undone DC's on the other side). Chain 3, turn. (22 DC's)
Rows 8 - 19 : DC into each DC. Chain 3, turn. (22 DC's). Bind off at the end of row 19.

Make two identical pieces following the above pattern. These are the front and back. Sew up the side & under-arm seam with a whip stitch or slip stitch. Sew up the upper arm / neck seam on either side, LEAVING A 7" HOLE IN THE CENTER FOR THE NECK HOLE. Finish by edging the neck, sleeves, and bottom edge with your favorite decorative stitch. The one pictured is edged with a ruffle madde by Chain 3, slip stitch into each DC.

Preschooler's Knit Backpack

This little backpack is perfect for a sippy cup, snack, and small toy. My kids go everywhere with theirs!

Materials
Approximately 6 oz worsted weight yarn

Size 11 (US) 16" circular needle

One stitch marker

Size K crochet hook

NOTE : Backpack is knit in the round while holding 2 strands of yarn throughout.

Holding 2 strands together, cast on 60 stitches. Carefully join stitches in the round. Place stitch marker.

Rounds 1 - 3 : Knit

Round 4 : *K1, K2tog, YO* continue for entire round

Rounds 5 - ? : Knit until backpack reaches desired length (I make mine 9" long).

Next round : K2tog to end of round (30 sts)

Next round : K2tog to end of round (15 sts)DO NOT BIND OFF. Cut yarn, leaving a 6" tail. Thread tail through stitches on needle and pull tight, closing up the bottom of the backpack. Tie off and weave in end.

Strap : This is knitted in rows (flat). Cast on 8 stitches. Using garter stitch (knit each row), knit until strap reaches approx. 22" in length. Bind off and weave in ends. Fold strap in half, forming a "V". Sew FOLDED end to the top center back of the pack. Sew the two ends to the bottom sides of the pack.

Cord : Using a size K crochet hook, make a chain approx. 20" long. Knot both ends. This is the cord. Thread it through the holes made by the YO's in row 4, with both ends coming out the center front.
