This cute and stretchy newborn hat is crochet from side to side. It is mostly HDC, but the top few stitches are SC to make it narrower, so there's less to gather at the top! Below is a basic pattern Look in my links at the right to find a Striped Version with a decorative top and a Pumpkin Version.

Do you have the measurements to make bigger sizes, like for a toddler or adult?

    I love making this hat.
I made a dozen and sent to charity in Japan after the tsunami.
Wish I could find some mittens to match it.
    I'll try to wing it.

I can't wait to see how these turn out! I know when my son was born they gave us two crochet hats and one would not stay on at all and the other was amazing.. I think it's the difference between working in a round vs side-to-side.. Thanks for sharing! I'll let you know how it works out

  6. I'm so confused. If I slip stitch after a row one that leaves my tail at the bottom of the hat?

  7. I am looking for a pattern for a crocheted stocking cap for an infant. The kind with the long tail that is popular at Christmas time, usually red and white striped. I cannot find anything. Anyone have one they can share?

  8. Thanks so much for this pattern! I love it! I have always had trouble with crocheting hats with round patterns for some reason. I always lose my place, and it's very difficult to try to resize something. Your pattern is so easy, and if I want to make it larger, it seems like it would be very easy to figure out how to do that. Mine turned out perfectly, and I even added a pom pom to the top.

    1. If you do a search for basic head sizes, you can adjust rows to accommodate bigger sizes. Also, you can adjust length by increasing foundation chains.

  10. I've made this hat many times! I like how the top is tapered so there are fewer stitches to gather...😊
